Karen made it home today after schooling for work in Florida for the week. We went out to Red Pines for fish and shrimp (it was surprisingly good). Since it was not an all night affair and there was still daylight to be utilized when we got home the most logical thing to do was grab the pole and head down the hill. Besides, no one was fishing and I would have the little bay all to myself.
The fishing was not great and my luck was even worse. After just a couple of casts and the same amount of fish I was tangled in the tree branches. Now I must tell you, some of these trees are starting to look like they are adorned for the Christmas season with the various size and shapes of bobbers. I gently tried to work my gear free of the grasping branches, but of course my line just wrapped itself around the branches evern more. With no extra terminal tackle I made a bee line up the hill for replacement tackle. By the time I got back it was pretty dark and the fish had lost their feeding mood.
Observations
There are still brave and die-hard ice fishermen tip toeing out on the ice along fishermans road. Also, tonight there was quite a large amount of debris floating in the landing bay.

H2O: 11.69', rising, 125 kcfs, slightly dirty
Location: Mississippi R. Pool 7 (Behind house)
Caught: The crappies were biting real well tonight. I also caught a few small bluegills.

Comments
I wanted to get out beind the house a little sooner that I did, but the banks were full of other anglers wetting lines. When I did get down there only about four anglers remained. It did not take long to see they were not catching much. I figured I would not fare any better.
My first cast and the bobber had not even settled, when I got the tell tale sign of something tugging on the line below the surface. The first fish was a small gill. After several smallish gills the crappies became active. I must have caught twenty more in a very short time. The were still biting when daylight was to far gone to illuminate my bobber anymore.
Observations:
Still ice on the airport bay and still ice fisherman out punching holes through the last remaining sheets. The sheltered areas still have some snow cover. I also noticed some remnent ice along the shorline up Black Deer's Channel.

Weather: Clear, Calm , 37degrees, 30.25 steady
H2O: 11.24', rising, 115 kcfs, surprisingly clear
Location: Mississippi R. Pool 7 (Black Deer's Channel)
Caught: Lots of smallish perch, a couple of crappies and two bluegills and even some tiny bass.
Partners: None

It was the first time out this year with the go-devil, and it performed flawlessly. I decided to head up the channel to see what I could catch. I started out on the lowe side by Greg's and came up empty handed. The next stop on the exporitory tour was just north of Schultz, next to the trees in the water. I ended up with one small bluegill here: I think the current was just a little too strong at these two portions in the channel.
Next stop was the upper end of the channel where it necks down where the first major tree is in the water. I caught a few crappies here, one bluegill and one small perch. The next and fianl stop was about three housed down from Tim Meiyer's house. This area was definately holding fish! I caught lots of perch (most small, but some mediocre), little bass, and a few decent crappies. The go-to bait was a chunk of crawler on a small jig suspended about two feet under a bobber.
Observations:
There was some kids in the upper end of the channel fishing off tree leaning in the water, that were catching some crappies. Also, a boat just to the south of my last stop was doing pretty good putin a lickin on the crappies using a minnow under a cork.

Caught: Approximately one dozen crappies from 8-11.5 inches

I have wanted to catch crappies this winter on tip downs, and today was finally the day. The action was not fast and furious, but I did have a fair amount of action. The crappies were coming from about 15 feet of water and they were within two feet of the bottom. I tried jigging for the slabs, but only managed to bring one up to the sunshine.
Buck he was the walleye master today. He was mostly targeting walleyes in 15 feet of water using a tip down with a one thirty second ounce jig and a large pike minnow. Buck was definately the fish king of the day. He walked off the ice with five walleyes between 16-18 inches. Adam ended the day with some bluegills a few crappies and one close call with a sea gull. A gull was rather brave and was taking minnows off the ice close to Adam, so Adam tried to catch it. I guess it did take his baited hook, but Adam missed that strike.
Observations:
The current was too fast in most places to fish a small ice jig, but when I went to the back of the bay the current was non-existent and I was able to see the jig on th locator.

Fishing was not too bad tonight. It seemed the darker it got the better the fish bit. I did catch some crappies, but they were all between 8-9 inches.
Observations:
The water appears to have stabilized and it is realitively clear for as high as it is. I did notice quite a few small minnows in the bay tonight.

I talked to the same group of fisherman that had caught a pile of crappies last year behind the house and they were not having any luck what so ever this year. The had told me the go to bait is berkley gulp in the small jars.
