Observations: The river is continuing to drop and some areas look impassible. There was an incredibly large bug hatch again tonight.
The flat head fishing was not that good tonight. I did manage to catch one little one and Scott missed a couple of bites, but that was it. We once again found the bluegills amongst the snags, but the rocks sure was not attracting them.

Observations: The water level on this pool has gotten quite low. In fact it is even hard to get out to the main channel. I do not blame that on the low water levels, but more on the sedimentation that is going on in the back sloughs. The wild celery is having a great growing season whereas the wild rice is struggling. And oh my gosh, the bugs are a plague. There are very numerous and everywhere.
Fishing was good tonight. To begin with the bait catching was fairly easy. The gills were lacking on the rocks and in the wood along the main channel, but they were quite numerous in the back channels on the wood. We had a good cat night. We had five bites and caught three nice flat heads.

I was out trying to catch two large mouth bass for a Friday night grill out with a friend. I failed! I had one decent bass on which I lost and I watched a mid-sized pike come out of the water and engulf my topwater frog. I purposely did not set the hook, because I did not want to lose my ten dollar frog. My two baits that I used tonight were a topwater frog that was dressed with a creature bait trailer.

Caught: Bait: crappies, bluegills and one rock bass
Observations: The rice is not too healthy looking this year, it is really spotty. The bug hatch was really incredible last night, and of course along with the bugs came plenty of bats.
Tonight it as a flat head date with myself. I have not fished for them in probably two months. Bait catching was easy, but getting the right size was impossible. The bluegills were all magnums! I could not find any under 7.5”. I only had one bite and missed that one. I did try one of my main river spots but the current was too swift and the weeds were too numerous.

7-29-18 thru 8-4-18 Treeland's Resort
Where/What: Chippewa Foliage, Hayward, WI vacation at Treeland’s Resort
Weather: Sunny and 80º to rainy and 65º
H20: 69-78º, clear on east side but green on west side
Caught: Mostly LMB but a few pike and SMB’s mixed in
Observations: The flowage was down about 1-1 1/2 foot from normal summer pool. There was some aquatic vegetation but no way near what it was during the past years when we first started going there. There was very little mill foil and not much for lily pads either. The winter drawdown has really hammered the vegetation.
Once again the week in Hayward went by very fast. I actually missed a couple of days fishing this year. I started out the week kinda down on account of my daughter Autumn not being there. I mainly fish for bass but I did try a little walleye fishing; caught one 13”. I had planned to crappie fish some, but the reports were not good so I skipped the crappie fishing. I mainly fished for LMB and had a pretty decent time catching them on a frog. In fact I even caught some SMB on the frog.
The bar picture is of some of our friends having a good time in the bar. We did spend a fair number of evenings in the lodge enjoying ourselves.

Observations: The water is dropping rapidly now. It appears as if the persistent high water of this summer has taken its toll on the emergent aquatic vegetation. It is not looking to healthy and it is not very thick.
I should have been packing for our annual Hayward vacation, but I was instead fishing. I told Karen I was going to go out and catch a bass for our dinner. Besides I needed to have some fishing action before I went to Hayward, because I was not expecting much in there. I did catch my dinner bass in about five minutes. I got into a tight bunch of fish and the action was explosive! All the fish were caught on a frog.

Observations: The river is still pretty high, and some of the lower lying woods are still flooded. This pool does not have the abundance of wild rice as there is on pool 7.
It was my first company bass tournament and actually the second annual. I was fishing with a co worker that had very little fishing experience. He did very well for himself, he ended up catching two or the four keepers that we weighed in. I caught a lot of bass but most were in the 12-13 inch range. We did get second in the tournament and ended up earning $100 for our efforts. After the fish weigh in we had a nice little get together and picnic.

Kevin has not fished a lot, so I wanted to get him out on the water before Sunday. I taught him how to use a bait caster, which he was able to use after just a few minutes of instruction. He also fished with a spinning reel which he did have some prior experience with.
The fishing was slow. I had four bites, but only caught one fish. Unfortunately Kevin did not have any action, but he did enjoy the boating and the river.

Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: mostly hot and humid, with temps in the upper 80’s to lower 90’s
H20: High and still around 10’, the water temperature is around 80º
Caught: Not a lot of bass pre fishing but did catch a lot during the tournament
Observations: The river is still hight for this time of year. There is a ample growth of aquatic vegetation, although the milfoil is not as wide spread this year. Also, there are large concentrations of minnows in certain areas.
I had a bass tournament out of trempealeau this Saturday. It was put on by the Lions Club as another fundraiser for Catfish Days. I had been searching for bass all week prior to Saturday. Let me state it this way, my pre fishing was not very good.
tournament day went fairly well. We did not place but we came in around 10th out of 80 boats. Not what I wanted, I was fishing to at least place. My first spot I was very surprised there was not already a boat there. You see we were in the last flight and one of the last boats to take off, and it did not help that I have a slower boat. Anyway I was very excited to see we had our first spot to ourselves. But, it soon became apparent why, there were no bass there. Our first five fish were dog fish!
I knew the bass I had found earlier in the week had not gone too far. We made a short move and it was bass on. we caught lots of bass and never really had to move to far, we pretty much worked over the one spot all day. We ended up with 17.22 pounds with our six fish limit. It we would have hit the 18 pound mark we would have cashed a check.
One very unique thing that happened was one of the bass that was being carried with the other bass in a bag filled with water to the weigh in scale spit up a bird that it had eaten. I have never seen a fish eat a bird, but thought it could be possible and now I had the proof.

It was a two-time fishing day for me today. In the morning I went out with my old neighbor Luke and his son Cade. We were in a fishing tournament with Luke’s younger brother Chad and one of his friends. The completion was not even close, we crushed them.
In the evening I was out exploring by myself. I did not do great but I did find a bass here and there. All the fishing today was done on the upper end of the pool.

Observations: The water around Stoddard is extremely clear. there is also a great abundance of wild rice on this pool. The wild rice is definitely taking over other species of aquatic plants. I also heard quite a few bull frogs on this pool.
The fishing was not too bad down by Stoddard, but when I moved north up by Goose Island the bass vanished. I did however catch two walleyes up there and I think if I would have targeted them I might of ended up with a few. The majority of the fish I caught today came off of a swim jig.

Observations: The river is continuing to drop and is clearing up nicely and the Black is extremely clear. There is definitely an overabundance of wild rice this year. I have yet to do well fishing in this stuff.

Observations: The water is right at flood stage but it has started to drop. The clarity of the water is exceptional for the highness of it. Even with the high water most of the emergent aquatic vegetation is still above the water line.
Our after work bass fishing excursion was a success. The temperature felt really hot to me tonight, but other than that it was a gorgeous night. The fish were very scattered and hard to find, but we were able to get a few nice ones. Even though the fish were scattered they were very aggressive once we found them. I used every bait I had pre rigged on my rod and reel combos and I caught fish on the four different set ups.

Caught: 10 LMB only one of which was legal
Observations: Everything looks pretty normal here for this time of year, except there are areas on the lake which have current which I had never noticed before. There is also a pretty good amount of water going out the outflow tube. And of course there are a gazillion silver dollar size pads almost everywhere.
It was a tough day of fishing here today. The action was pathetic and the size of the fish also was. I think all the small bass I caught were males that were guarding nests. The last hour of daylight I tried a little muskie fishing, but I had no action from that species. On the plus side the scenery is always great. The deer were plentiful and I saw many of them in the water along the shoreline eating aquatic vegetation.

Observations: Everything looks pretty normal here for this time of year, except there are areas on the lake which have current which I had never noticed before. There is also a pretty good amount of water going out the outflow tube. And of course there are a gazillion silver dollar size pads almost everywhere.
It was a tough day of fishing here today. The action was pathetic and the size of the fish also was. I think all the small bass I caught were males that were guarding nests. The last hour of daylight I tried a little muskie fishing, but I had no action from that species. On the plus side the scenery is always great. The deer were plentiful and I saw many of them in the water along the shoreline eating aquatic vegetation.

Where/What: Mississippi River pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1853) E6, overcast, 73º 29.83 falling
H20: ?º, 8.51 rising, 73.7 kfs, dirty with lots of floating weeds
Caught: 1 LMB and 1 pike
Observations: The water is rising quickly and it is very muddy with lots of floating weeds present. The emergent aquatic plants are starting to bloom.
It was a solo trip after work tonight. the first hour for me was a bust. I concentrated on the channel area behind the house, but it was very muddy and I had no action what so ever. I almost gave up, but I thought if I found some cleaner water I may have a chance at catching some fish. I did find some better water to the north and with that clear water I did find a small group of fish. I hate to say it but I actually caught both fish on a Ribbit buzzing frog. I also slowed down and did some punching. Once again I had about four good bites using that technique, but I was not able to hook up on any fish.
