I had to try different scenery this morning, and it paid off. It was between showers and storms that the fishing was at its peak. It was quite amazing that I was in within a mile of downtown La Crosse. And yet it was very remote, wild and quiet

Tonight was a very hot, sticky summers ever. I did not think the evenings cool-down was ever going to happen! Again, at dusk the mini mayflies were out in full force. They were terribly numerous and bothersome. It was if I was inside one of those winter scene snow globes that were being constantly shaken.

Comments

Tonight was calm, clear and just beautiful. The action however was very sparse. However I did not capitalize on all the opportunities that presented themselves.
Just before dark there was an incredible hatch of insects. The best way to describe them would be to say they were miniature albino may flies. These critters were not biting insects, however they were incredibly annoying. They clung to any and all surfaces including my eyes, ears and entire face. These tiny flies also signaled it was dinner time for the mighty predatory dragonfly.
These large winged creatures looked like Japanese Zeroes waiting for an opportune time to rush in for the kill.

Day 67-298 to go

2. Flat Head 9lb, 10:15pm, bluegill

Area fished

1. Main channel areas pool 7.

Fishing Partners

1. Jake and Mike (former co-workers)

Comments

The bluegills are definitely in their summer haunts; current and rocks. They were tearing up the crawlers, we went through one dozen and in no time. We even caught a few other species of fish while getting our bluegill bait. These included both small and large mouth bass, channel catfish and sheep head. Jake caught a 17lb flathead, but Mike caught the trophy of the night, a 30 lb behemoth.

3. Large Mouth Bass, 17”, swim jig

Comments

Today was very hot and humid (95°). Just before I headed for the water storm clouds appeared. Then, just as quickly they disappeared. After the storm threat vanished the humidity dropped drastically. Top-water action was as elusive as a pot o gold at the end of the rainbow. All the fish caught were relating to lily pads next to deep water.

Day 65-300 to go
7:30pm-11:00pm

2. Flathead 9lb 8oz, 9:45pm, crappie

Area fished

Comments

It was another warm and sticky night. I was able to catch crappies in the past years haunts. The numbers were not impressive, but the size made up for it! Sommners Chute was as popular as the county fair tonight. There were two other boats set-up fishing flatheads. As Troy would call the other fisherman encroaching on his area; “those wiener lips”.

6-21-2009
Day 64-301 to go
6:30pm-10:30pm

Weather : SE8, overcast, 75°, 29.74 falling

Fish caught

1. Bluegills (8) 5-8”, worms, kept for bait.

Area fished

1. Lake Onalaska, Bullet Chute

Fishing Partners

1. Jake

Comments

Bluegills were harder to get tonight; I think the loving is over. Tonight I had Jake fishing with me. He is a young co-worker with very little fishing experience. In fact, the first time I took him along I thought it was take a kid fishing day.
We missed several fish before Jake finally connected with a 17 pounder. Mosquitoes are still numerous, and when a light is turned on many types of marauding night insects swarm to the source.
The water stage of Bullet Chute is about as low as it can go and still allow me to navigate its sandy bars. Flashes of lightning in the warm sticky night sky chased us home early tonight.

Comments

How was the fishing? In one word it sucked! We tried about everything and anything, but it was not a successful fishing day. The day was hot, humid, sunny and calm, which is the type of weather I seriously dislike. The main channel is fantastically clear. I was able to see a quarter size clam shell resting on the bottom in six feet of water. I was like a little kid in a candy store, I could not get enough of looking for and seeing fish. It was as if a new world had opened that I had never been able to see before. I saw carp, smallmouth bass and suckers relating to the wing dams. This was definitely a first for me and something I look forward to seeing again.

Comments

My fishing partner for the night was Fritz, (my hunting dog). The bluegills are still playing defend the fort. I am really surprised that they are still in the loving mood.

The mosquitoes are still on a mission to make the evenings miserable. Even a strong northerly breeze did not keep them at bay.

I caught three fish and probably missed as many. The flats did not seem overly concerned with filling their tummy’s tonight.

Comments

It was another night of solid rain. Bluegills are getting harder to come by, I think the spawn is over. Top water action in front of Shanky’s was pretty good. I believe this probably has been going on for a couple of weeks. Flatheads appear to be relating to current.

Comments

Today was a gorgeous day. There was no pesky wind and the temperature was in the lower 80’s. Karen rode in her new boat for the very first time. The bugs were really swarming tonight while I was cat fishing. I did not dare have a light on, for fear it would be a landing light to bring the bugs in. It was if I was the parade and the bugs were the confetti. These bugs looked like very tiny may flies. That brings up another subject: why are they called mayflies. The largest hatch in our area occurs around the 4th of July. I think we should call them independence bugs. After all they appear on the 4th and they gain their independence from their watery nursery on the day they appear.

River was fairly high and fast, however it was clear. Not much activity tonight, just one bite and one flathead. The mosquitoes were again on a mission to make us as miserable as possible. We saw one deer munching water vegetation along the shoreline. When we anchored for cat fishing the water rushing past the boat made an almost a mythical musical sound.

6:15PM-7:30PM

Weather : E5, light rain, 61°, 29.96-falling

Fish caught

1. No fish were caught, although I did lose three trout. Once hooked these fish were amazing. They acted as if they had been stimulated by some sort of electrical current, rolling and shaking uncontrollably.

It was another cold evening for this time of year. The beavers were not very happy with me tonight. They would swim near the boat and with a powerful slap of the tail which made a ker splunk sound, would vanish. They would then re-appear and repeat the process over and over. I also saw a deer at the waters edge; this was the first sighting of the year. She was very content at eating her aquatic salad, paying me little attention.. Her summer coat was radiating a crimson color in the fading light.

Today is the 65th anniversary of D-Day. I cannot stop thinking of the young men and the sacrifices they made for their country and the people of Europe. Some of these young men never made it home, and the others who did eventually come home were probably never the same. So as I fish on this cold dreary evening I am thinking about the sacrifices you made so long ago. And I thank you for your service to this country and for the liberation of Europe.
On a lighter note, as a result of the cold temps and the rain the water temperature has fallen almost ten degrees.

The water was very peaceful today, it was a weekday so boat traffic was light. The water was very still with only an occasional ripple from a mis-guided breeze. The river is in a constant state of change. An area where a Black river tributary flows into the backwaters had three feet of water just three days ago. Today, it is a sand bar with just a mere covering of water. I met an elderly gentleman and his wife at the landing this evening. I could tell from his body language that he did not know this stretch of the river. He told me the other landing was full and he wanted to know where he could run his boat. Said he was looking for a few pan fish to catch. I told him to follow the opening and be mindful of underwater obstructions. He said thanks and he walked away. Well I got to feeling sorry for this fella and his wife, so I went over to him. I suggested he try at the end of the dike, where he certainly could catch a bluegill or two. He again thanked me and we parted with a smile.

It was a very still and frigid night tonight. The water had a look of plate glass with a wisp or two of fog forming on the tranquil surface. The silence of the night was occasionally broken by the honk on a lone goose perhaps separated from its mate. Or, the metallic click click of the clicker on the reel as a fish snatched and ran with the sacrificial bluegill. The ride in Adams boat was one of excitement and fear. Excitement to get to the next spot and perhaps tie into a very large flathead. Fear because I have never plyed the waters in this stranger’s boat and did not know his skill of navigating the black night of the Mississippi river bottoms. All the while my back was turned in the opposite direction of travel. Occasionally I would get a glimpse of a clump of aquatic vegetation zip by my limited backward field of view. I did enjoy the spray of the water flinging out to the sides as we navigated turn after turn. The spray had the appearance of one of those crystal bead type curtains/room dividers that children enjoy playing with.

Comments

1. Very easy to get Bluegills, although most are too big. I think the ideal size this time of year is between five and six inches.
2. Cottonwood trees starting to shed fuzz.
3. There was lots of flow where I was fishing, but that did not seem to stop the fish from biting.
