8-14-18

8-14-18 6pm-11pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 flat head fishing
Weather: (1853) S9, 85º, clear, 29.90 steady
H20: ?º, mostly clear, 5.74 falling, 40 kcfs
Caught: bait: bluegills and a couple of crappies, Me: one 6 lb. flat head

Observations: The river is continuing to drop and some areas look impassible. There was an incredibly large bug hatch again tonight.

The flat head fishing was not that good tonight. I did manage to catch one little one and Scott missed a couple of bites, but that was it. We once again found the bluegills amongst the snags, but the rocks sure was not attracting them.

8-11-18

8-11-18 6pm-12am
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 flat head fishing with Scott
Weather: (1853) W8, 86º, clear, 30.02 rising
H20: 83º, clear, 5.84 falling, 42 kcfs
Caught: Bait - bluegills and crappies. Me: 17 & 34 LB flat heads, Scott: 29 LB flat head

Observations: The water level on this pool has gotten quite low. In fact it is even hard to get out to the main channel. I do not blame that on the low water levels, but more on the sedimentation that is going on in the back sloughs. The wild celery is having a great growing season whereas the wild rice is struggling. And oh my gosh, the bugs are a plague. There are very numerous and everywhere.

Fishing was good tonight. To begin with the bait catching was fairly easy. The gills were lacking on the rocks and in the wood along the main channel, but they were quite numerous in the back channels on the wood. We had a good cat night. We had five bites and caught three nice flat heads.

8-8-18

8-8-18 7pm-845pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (approx) calm, 85º, clear
H20: ?º, mostly clear, 5.98 falling, 45 kcfs
Caught: Nothing

Observations:None

I was out trying to catch two large mouth bass for a Friday night grill out with a friend. I failed! I had one decent bass on which I lost and I watched a mid-sized pike come out of the water and engulf my topwater frog. I purposely did not set the hook, because I did not want to lose my ten dollar frog. My two baits that I used tonight were a topwater frog that was dressed with a creature bait trailer.

8-6-18

6pm-1015pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool flat head fishing
Weather: (1853) calm, clear, 79º, 29.99 rising
H20: ?º, mostly clear, 6.36 falling, 50 kcfs
Caught: Bait: crappies, bluegills and one rock bass

Observations: The rice is not too healthy looking this year, it is really spotty. The bug hatch was really incredible last night, and of course along with the bugs came plenty of bats.

Tonight it as a flat head date with myself. I have not fished for them in probably two months. Bait catching was easy, but getting the right size was impossible. The bluegills were all magnums! I could not find any under 7.5”. I only had one bite and missed that one. I did try one of my main river spots but the current was too swift and the weeds were too numerous.

8-5-18

8-5-18 10am-1230pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1053) E3, 77º, fair, 29.93 rising
H20: ?º, mostly clear, 6.34 falling, 50 kcfs
Caught: Approx. 5 LMB

Observations: What a difference a week on the river can look like. Any areas with current look fine, but the areas on the lake without flow are weed choked and almost stagnant.

The fishing was not too great today. I did have some action but nothing was consistent. I could not believe the number of bass fishermen in the Goose Lake area, something was definitely going on there. Lake area, something was definitely going on there.

7-29-18 thru 8-4-18 Treeland's Resort

Where/What: Chippewa Foliage, Hayward, WI vacation at Treeland’s Resort
Weather: Sunny and 80º to rainy and 65º
H20: 69-78º, clear on east side but green on west side
Caught: Mostly LMB but a few pike and SMB’s mixed in

Observations: The flowage was down about 1-1 1/2 foot from normal summer pool. There was some aquatic vegetation but no way near what it was during the past years when we first started going there. There was very little mill foil and not much for lily pads either. The winter drawdown has really hammered the vegetation.

Once again the week in Hayward went by very fast. I actually missed a couple of days fishing this year. I started out the week kinda down on account of my daughter Autumn not being there. I mainly fish for bass but I did try a little walleye fishing; caught one 13”. I had planned to crappie fish some, but the reports were not good so I skipped the crappie fishing. I mainly fished for LMB and had a pretty decent time catching them on a frog. In fact I even caught some SMB on the frog.

The bar picture is of some of our friends having a good time in the bar. We did spend a fair number of evenings in the lodge enjoying ourselves.
7-27-18 6 pm-730 pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (approximate) sunny, 80º, calm
H20: 78º, mostly clear, 10 falling
Caught: Approx. 5 LMB, 1 SMB and 1 pike

Observations: The water is dropping rapidly now. It appears as if the persistent high water of this summer has taken its toll on the emergent aquatic vegetation. It is not looking to healthy and it is not very thick.

I should have been packing for our annual Hayward vacation, but I was instead fishing. I told Karen I was going to go out and catch a bass for our dinner. Besides I needed to have some fishing action before I went to Hayward, because I was not expecting much in there. I did catch my dinner bass in about five minutes. I got into a tight bunch of fish and the action was explosive! All the fish were caught on a frog.

7-22-18

7-22-18 6am-2pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 8 company bass fishing with co-worker Kevin Potts as my partner
Weather: Partly sunny to sunny, 81º, light winds
H20: 81º, mostly clear, 10 falling
Caught: Lots of LMB’s mostly between 12-13”, we weighed in four legal LMB’s

Observations: The river is still pretty high, and some of the lower lying woods are still flooded. This pool does not have the abundance of wild rice as there is on pool 7.

It was my first company bass tournament and actually the second annual. I was fishing with a co worker that had very little fishing experience. He did very well for himself, he ended up catching two or the four keepers that we weighed in. I caught a lot of bass but most were in the 12-13 inch range. We did get second in the tournament and ended up earning $100 for our efforts. After the fish weigh in we had a nice little get together and picnic.

Friday, July 20, 2018

7-18-18 630pm-9pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1853) E3, 81º, clear, 30.00 falling
H20: 81º, clear, 9.73 rising, 86 kcfs
Caught: Approx. 5 10-12” LMB’s

Observations: The water level is dropping very slowly, also the lake is looking like a scum hole.

I was back to the Trempealeau area in hopes of getting a couple of quick bass for the grill. Well, my plans failed. I did not catch some bass but the ones I did catch were small. Yes I do keep a bass now and then, but the ones I do keep are never over 15-16”.

7-17-18 bass fishing

7-17-18 530pm-815pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 8 bass fishing with co-worker Kevin
Weather: (1853) vrbl 5, 81º, clear, 30.08 rising
H20: 81º, clear, 9.68 falling, 87 kcfs
Caught: 1 small LMB

Observations: The water on this pool is very high and fast. There was also an abundance of green slimming moss in certain areas.

I have a company bass tournament on this pool out of Goose Island on Sunday. Kevin is a co worker whom I invited to fish with me in the tournament. Kevin has not fished a lot, so I wanted to get him out on the water before Sunday. I taught him how to use a bait caster, which he was able to use after just a few minutes of instruction. He also fished with a spinning reel which he did have some prior experience with.

The fishing was slow. I had four bites, but only caught one fish. Unfortunately Kevin did not have any action, but he did enjoy the boating and the river.

Monday, July 16, 2018

7-10 thru 7-14 2018 bass fishing

7-10 thru 714–18
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: mostly hot and humid, with temps in the upper 80’s to lower 90’s
H20: High and still around 10’, the water temperature is around 80º
Caught: Not a lot of bass pre fishing but did catch a lot during the tournament

Observations: The river is still hight for this time of year. There is a ample growth of aquatic vegetation, although the milfoil is not as wide spread this year. Also, there are large concentrations of minnows in certain areas.

I had a bass tournament out of trempealeau this Saturday. It was put on by the Lions Club as another fundraiser for Catfish Days. I had been searching for bass all week prior to Saturday. Let me state it this way, my pre fishing was not very good.
tournament day went fairly well. We did not place but we came in around 10th out of 80 boats. Not what I wanted, I was fishing to at least place. My first spot I was very surprised there was not already a boat there. You see we were in the last flight and one of the last boats to take off, and it did not help that I have a slower boat. Anyway I was very excited to see we had our first spot to ourselves. But, it soon became apparent why, there were no bass there. Our first five fish were dog fish!
I knew the bass I had found earlier in the week had not gone too far. We made a short move and it was bass on. we caught lots of bass and never really had to move to far, we pretty much worked over the one spot all day. We ended up with 17.22 pounds with our six fish limit. It we would have hit the 18 pound mark we would have cashed a check.
One very unique thing that happened was one of the bass that was being carried with the other bass in a bag filled with water to the weigh in scale spit up a bird that it had eaten. I have never seen a fish eat a bird, but thought it could be possible and now I had the proof.

7-8-18 bass fishing with Luke and Cade

7-8-18 730am-1130am, 430pm-9pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing with Luke and Cade in am, and by myself in pm
Weather: (0953) S13, 77º, clear, 30.20 falling
H20: 78º, clear, 10.38 falling, 97 kcfs
Caught: Lots of LMB and a couple of pike

Observations: The water is still high, but in some areas it is very clear. The mosquito crop in enormous and it is quite miserable behind the house in the evening.

It was a two-time fishing day for me today. In the morning I went out with my old neighbor Luke and his son Cade. We were in a fishing tournament with Luke’s younger brother Chad and one of his friends. The completion was not even close, we crushed them.

In the evening I was out exploring by myself. I did not do great but I did find a bass here and there. All the fishing today was done on the upper end of the pool.

7-7-18 bass fishing

7-7-18 2pm-4pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1453) S10, 81º, clear, 30.28 falling
H20: 80º, clear, 10.44 falling, 98 kcfs
Caught: Approx. 2 LMB

Observations: There was a very minor fish fly hatch last night.

Today was a project and party day, so I did not have much time to fish. I just exposed the area to the west of the house and within a half mile. I caught a couple of fish, but never did find or learn of any new spots holding any bass.

7-5-18 bass fishing

7-5-18 6pm-915pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1853) N13, 83º, clear, 30.13 rising
H20: 80º, 10.47 falling, 98 kcfs, mostly clear
Caught: Many nice sized large mouths

Observations: none

The bass fishing was fantastic tonight. I did not do any exploring, I just hit the money spots. The main two baits that accounted for the most bass were a jig with a trailer and a frog.

7-4-18 bass fishing

7-4-18 630am-12pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 8 bass fishing
Weather: (1053) S17 G23, 88º, clear, 30.13 steady
H20: 80º, very clear in Stoddard, dingy to fairly clear by Goose Island, 10.38 rising, 97 kcfs
Caught: Approx. 6 LMB

Observations: The water around Stoddard is extremely clear. there is also a great abundance of wild rice on this pool. The wild rice is definitely taking over other species of aquatic plants. I also heard quite a few bull frogs on this pool.

The fishing was not too bad down by Stoddard, but when I moved north up by Goose Island the bass vanished. I did however catch two walleyes up there and I think if I would have targeted them I might of ended up with a few. The majority of the fish I caught today came off of a swim jig.

7-3-18 bass fishing

7-3-18 6pm-830pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1853) SE16, 87º, clear, 30.03 rising
H20: ?º, clear, 10.4 falling, 96.9 kcfs
Caught: Approx. 8 LMB, 1 walleye and one dog fish

Observations: We have had a major fish fly hatch the last couple of nights.

I went back to the same spot where I had caught fish on Saturday night and the fish were still there. Most of the fish were caught by pitching to the grass banks.

7-1-18 bass fishing

7-1-18 9am-1pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1153) S13, 81º, mostly cloudy, 29.71 rising
H20: 80º, mostly clear, 10.81 falling, 103 kcfs
Caught: Approx. 6 LMB

Observations: The river is continuing to drop and is clearing up nicely and the Black is extremely clear. There is definitely an overabundance of wild rice this year. I have yet to do well fishing in this stuff.

I found a pretty good concentration of nice sized bass tonight. The fish were relating to grass banks in areas with low flow. A chatter bait and a swim jig were the go to baits.

6-27-18 pool 7 bass fishing

6-27-18 545pm-920pm
Where/What: Mississippi R. pool 7 bass fishing with Scott
Weather: (1853) 82º, NW3, clear 29.84 steady
H20: 76º, clear, 11.84 falling, 121kcfs
Caught: Me: 5 LMB, 1 pike and 1 dogfish. Scott: 1 LMB and 1 pike

Observations: The water is right at flood stage but it has started to drop. The clarity of the water is exceptional for the highness of it. Even with the high water most of the emergent aquatic vegetation is still above the water line.

Our after work bass fishing excursion was a success. The temperature felt really hot to me tonight, but other than that it was a gorgeous night. The fish were very scattered and hard to find, but we were able to get a few nice ones. Even though the fish were scattered they were very aggressive once we found them. I used every bait I had pre rigged on my rod and reel combos and I caught fish on the four different set ups.

6-24-18 Potter's Flowage

6-24-18 11am-830pm
Where/What: Potters Flowage, monroe county. bass/muskie fishing
Weather: calm, sunny most of the day, 82º
H20: ?º, stain typical tannic color, high
Caught: 10 LMB only one of which was legal

Observations: Everything looks pretty normal here for this time of year, except there are areas on the lake which have current which I had never noticed before. There is also a pretty good amount of water going out the outflow tube. And of course there are a gazillion silver dollar size pads almost everywhere.

It was a tough day of fishing here today. The action was pathetic and the size of the fish also was. I think all the small bass I caught were males that were guarding nests. The last hour of daylight I tried a little muskie fishing, but I had no action from that species. On the plus side the scenery is always great. The deer were plentiful and I saw many of them in the water along the shoreline eating aquatic vegetation.

6-20-18 bass fishing

6-20-18 550pm-810pm
Where/What: Mississippi River pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1853) E6, overcast, 73º 29.83 falling
H20: ?º, 8.51 rising, 73.7 kfs, dirty with lots of floating weeds
Caught: 1 LMB and 1 pike

Observations: The water is rising quickly and it is very muddy with lots of floating weeds present. The emergent aquatic plants are starting to bloom.

It was a solo trip after work tonight. the first hour for me was a bust. I concentrated on the channel area behind the house, but it was very muddy and I had no action what so ever. I almost gave up, but I thought if I found some cleaner water I may have a chance at catching some fish. I did find some better water to the north and with that clear water I did find a small group of fish. I hate to say it but I actually caught both fish on a Ribbit buzzing frog. I also slowed down and did some punching. Once again I had about four good bites using that technique, but I was not able to hook up on any fish.

6-18-18

6-18-18 6pm-915pm
Where/What: Mississippi River pool 7 bass fishing with Scott
Weather: (1853) N7, light rain, 78º 29.93 rising
H20: ?º, 7.81 rising, 67.1 kfs, dingy
Caught: Me: not a thing. Scott: 1 LMB, 1SMB, 1 pike and 1 dog fish

Observations: The water is quite dingy and it is going to get very dirty and nasty within the next couple of days.

It was a week night bass fishing outing with Scott. The fishing was poor, especially for me. I never caught a fish. I did have about four good bites punching, but I was not able to hook the fish. It is defiantly a good technique, I just need to learn how to hook the fish.
Scott fared a little better. I just was not into fishing tonight. Of course Scott had to fish the hell out of the frog in weedy areas. frog fishing is o’k, but it can be very unproductive if the fish are not active.

6-16-18 bass tournament

6-16-18 630am-3pm
Where/What: Mississippi River pool 5a bass tournament
Weather: (1253) SE9, clear, 87º 29.84 steady
H20: 73º, 653.28 rising, 52 kfs, mostly dingy
Caught: Me: two legal LMB’s, numerous pike with one measuring 37 inches. Scott: 2 Legal SMB’s and numerous small LMB’s and numerous pike

Observations: Today was a scorcher on the water. The south wind and a water temperature of 73 degrees saved me. There is quite a bit of rice on this pool, but most of it is still flat on the water. I did not see any wild celery plants.

It was our first bass tournament of the year, and we took fourth. Sounds like an okay finish right, well there were only four boat and we got clobbered by the other three boats. The whole deal was a bust! I told Scott before the tournament that small mouth bass were going to be a major element of the bags, and they were.
We on the other hand stuck to the non-existent frog bite almost all day. which, caused our embarrassing finish. Finally in the last hour I had enough of fishing the frog and we went smallmouth fishing. In actuality I had enough and seen enough to have abandoned the frog bite after a couple of hours. You just cannot make a fish bite what it does not want to bite. Anyway the last hour we did catch a couple of small mouths with one legal one put in the boat.

6-14-18

6-14-18 6pm-9pm
Where/What: Mississippi River pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1853) S14, clear, 76º 29.93 falling
H20: ?º, 7.34 steady, 62 kfs, fairly clear
Caught: 3 LMB’s, 2 pike and one dog fish

Observations: The river is in good shape. It is a little dingy, but it is clearing up. The wild rice is starting to stand up.

In a way I was pre fishing for my upcoming fishing tournament on Saturday. I was wanting to try the sloughs, which i did but with limited success. I also was trying out some rod/reel bait combos to get a feel for them. The action was not fantastic, but the strong south winds limited the areas where I could effectively fish.

Thursday, June 14, 2018

6-12-2018

6-12-18 615pm-9pm
Where/What: Mississippi River pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1853) S3, overcast, 77º 29.84 steady
H20: ?º, 7.24 falling, 62 kfs, dingy to clear
Caught: lots of pike and some nice LMB’s

Observations: The water on this pool is in pretty good shape; it is neither too high nor dirty. The emergent weeds are growing rapidly but they are not yet mature. The rice is still laying on the surface of the water, and it appears to be quite abundant.

I was out fun fishing but I was also concentrating on using and trying various baits and rod/reel combinations. I was basically pre fishing for an upcoming bass tourney I have on Saturday. The tourney is on a different pool, but fish haunts and techniques should be very similar. The fishing was very good tonight, especially the pike fishing. These fish were very aggressive. I lost a good number of baits to these toothy fish, but it was still fun.

Tuesday, June 12, 2018

6-10-18

6-10-18 730am-730pm
Where/What: Mississippi River pool 5a bass fishing with Scott
Weather: (1253) E8, overcast, 67º 29.93 falling
H20: 72º, 653.51 falling, 61 kfs, dingy
Caught: some bass, quite a few pike, a dogfish and a gar

Observations: The river up here was quite dirty, and the area was lacking any large expanses of weed growth. I did not notice any wild celery to amount to anything anywhere.

We were pre fishing for an upcoming bass tournament on Saturday. And let me tell you did we ever fish, a solid twelve hours worth. I can honestly say that we did not figure anything out. We caught some bass here and there, but nothing was significant or consistent. we could have caught a decent number of small mouths if we wanted to target them, but they were running fairly small. All the fish were relating to weeds, and especially areas with a large amount of weeds. The most consistent bait of the day was a plastic frog of some sort.

Saturday, June 9, 2018

6-9-18 bass fishing

6-9-18 10am-12:00pm
Where/What: Mississippi River pool 7 bass fishing
Weather: (1053) SE8, clear, 73º 29.98 falling
H20: ?º, 7.15 falling, clear, 61 kcfs
Caught: 4 LMB one small pike

Observations: There is lots of rice springing up. None of it yet standing, but about 12-18 inches of the plant is laying on the surface.

I only got out for a couple of hours today. My original plan was to fish the channel behind my house, but after about twenty minutes of no bass I knew I had to fish other waters. I ended up fishing the slop out by the main channel and was able to boat a few bass. The action was not fast but there was enough that if i did not have other commitments I would have fished longer.

6-5-18 Cat Fishing

6-5-18 6:45pm-11:00pm
Where/What: Mississippi River pool 7 cat fishing with Scott
Weather: (2153) E5, clear, 72º 29.87 steady
H20: ?º, 7.24 falling, clear, 62 kcfs
Caught: Bait - bluegills and perch, Scott caught a 10 pound flat head

Observations: The aquatic vegetation has really taken off on this pool. More and more of the back sloughs are being obliterated by sedimentation.

Tonight was my second night of cat fishing this season. For myself it was once again a bust, but once again Scott was the champ.

6-3-18 bass fishing

6-3-18 7:30am-2:00pm with Scott
Where/What: Mississippi River pool 8 bass fishing with Scott
Weather: Windy W 16 G30, overcast, 65º 29.92 rising
H20: 72º, 7.11 rising, dirty, 60 kcfs
Caught: (Approx.) 6 largemouth and 3 pike for each of us

Observations: The water is down considerably. Some areas have abundant weed growth and other areas are sparse with vegetation.

The fishing was pretty slow today. The only consistency we had were a few bass tucked along grass islands that had some decent current areas along them. We also has had a little action throwing frogs in the slop, but we never did hook any of them.

Sunday, May 20, 2018

5-20-18

5-20-18 10:45am-8:30pm with Scott
Where/What: Mississippi River pool 8 bass and pike fishing
Weather: Rain to sun, 54-64º 29.96 falling
H20: 63º, 8.22 falling, clear, 71 kcfs
Caught: Lots of bass and pike with a few dog fish and two small mouth bass caught by Scott

Observations: The water is still relatively high below the dam. Some of the trees are still flooded. Lily pads are starting to rest on the surface but other than that there is not much aquatic growth in this area.

The fishing was quite good today. The fish count between the two of us easily exceeded fifty fish, with the majority being large mouth bass. Numbers wise between the two of us we were pretty close to being even. Scott pretty much stayed with a chatter bait all day, whereas I changed up quite often. My two go to baits were an in line mepps spinner and a swim jig.

5-19-18

5-19-18 Lake Onalaska backwaters Pool 7, myself 730am-130pm
Weather: (1153) calm, overcast, 75º, 29.86 rising
H20: ?º, 8.5 falling, clear, 74 kcfs
Caught: A fair number of pike, 3 LMB, kept 4 pike, 1 LMB and 1 bluegill
Observations: The lilac and apple tree blooms are winding down. The river is rapidly falling and is extremely shallow behind my house. The aquatic vegetation is well under way.

My goal today was to catch some bluegills for and upcoming fish fry. It did not take me too long to realize that was an unreasonable goal. After about twenty minutes of fishing for gills I decided to concentrate on bass and pike. This fishing was not great but at least I did have some success.

5-17-18

5-17-18 Black River cat fishing with Scott 6pm-11pm
Weather: (1853) E10, clear, 79º, 30.01 rising
H20: ?º, 37.78 falling, clear, 1.58 kcfs
Caught: Bait and one channel cat (Scott)
Observations: The Black river had a little bit too much current for my liking. The mosquitoes and some other type of after dark nat size fly were incredible abundant and horrible.

The first cat fishing outing of the season was not a total bust, but it was not good either. Scott caught one channel cat and he had a couple of other bites. I believe our quarry the flat head catfish has not gotten active yet after a long winter of slumber.

Wednesday, May 16, 2018

5-15-2018

5-15-18 Lake Onalaska backwaters Pool 7, myself 715pm-830pm
Weather: (1953) W5, clear, 73º, 29.96 falling
H20: ?º, 9.21 falling, clear, 81 kcfs
Caught: Nothing
Observations: The apple trees and the tulips are both blooming. Seems a little odd as the tulips are usually early bloomers. The aquatic vegetation has just exploded in the last several days.

It was a brief after work fishing excursion. I had finished mowing the lawn for the first time this year and I still had daylight. I never did boat a fish. I did have about a half dozen feeble bites but the only fish I hooked was a dog fish and with one out of the water head shake it was gone. Honestly that did not bother me too much.

5-11 thru 5-13-2018

5-11 thru 5-13–18 Mississippi River near Nelson, WI. Myself and Norm along with Scott, Tom, Andy, Jeremy, Eon, Colton, Dean and Adain.
Weather: From 37º - 58º, rain to overcast with mostly light to calm winds
H20: 54-58º, 11.03 to 10.64 falling, clear, 72 kcfs
Caught: Lots of pike and a few Large mouth bass. Scott had the biggest pike at a whopping 39.5”
Observations: The lilacs and the apple trees are starting to bloom. I did not see any submerging or emergent plant growth. There were lots of dead rice beds from the previous summer that caused some difficult fishing in some areas.

It was our annual spring fling pike fest, and this year did not disappoint. All fishermen caught an ample amount of the toothy critters. The weather was quite chilling and long underwear were in order everyday. The cold temperatures did not seem to effect the aggressiveness of our quarry.
Friday night I took some of the guys on a dinner and booze road trip. Scott had a case of self induced alcohol indigestion. I was happy the next morning that I was the sober driver that night.

5-8-18

5-8-18 Lake Onalaska backwaters, myself 6pm-715pm
Weather: (1853) S6, clear, 78º, 29.92 falling
H20: ?º, 11.48 falling, clear, 114 kcfs
Caught: 2 , 2 LMB and 1 dog fish
Observations: The pear and plum trees are blooming and the apple trees cannot be too far off. The lily pads in the sheltered bays are now on the surface.

I had told Karen I was going to exercise for thirty minutes ( fish). I hit the exercising a little harder than I had planned, I guess exercising is not so bad! The river is my gym and playground, especially this time of year when the bass and pike are so easy to come by. It is so amazing how quickly things change on the river. Just two days ago I was fishing the same spots with Scott and we had very good action. Tonight I caught some fish, but it was no where near as good as it was then. In fact one of the best spots we had fished and did well at held no fish tonight.

5-7-18 Lake Onalaska backwaters, myself 6pm-830pm
Weather: (1853) W8, clear, 81º, 30.01 falling
H20: ?º, 11.77 falling, clear, 120 kcfs
Caught: 8 pike and 7 LMB
Observations: My red bud tree has started to bloom and I encountered my first mosquito of the season.

Another after work fishing trip is here and gone. Fishing was again very good. I had an even mixture of pike and bass. I had taken four pre-rigged poles with different baits, but I only needed to use the old reliable spinner bait.

5-6-18

5-6-18 Lake Onalaska backwaters with Scott, 5:15-8:30pm
Weather: (1753) clear, N16 G23, 75°, 30.07 rising
H20: 62°, clear, 11.9’ falling, 124,000kcfs
Caught: Me: 20, approx. 15 pike and 4LMB and 1 dogfish
Scott: 18, approx. 11 pike and 7 LMB
Observations: My red bud tree is about to bloom and dandelions are blooming. I did see a few lily pads in the back bays. They have not yet reached to surface but they are trying.

The weather tonight was again great. I did notice the insects are starting to show up, sure doesn’t take life long to start up once winter has passed. The trip tonight was very good! The pike were very aggressive and numerous. The fish we caught were mostly in that 26-28 inch range. The biggest pike was a 32 incher that I had caught last Thursday. How do I know it was the same fish you might ask? Well its head was a different shade of green/olive than a normal fish; it had a yellow tinge to it. Also on top of its back near its head was a round wound from where I had removed a lamprey just a few days prior. I caught all my fish on an inline spinner and spinner bait. Scott caught his on a spinner bait and swim bait.

5-5-18

5-5-18 Genoa backwaters with Norm Jambois, 2pm-7pm
Weather: (1553) clear, NE5, 82°, 29.93 steady ↓
H20: 62°, clear, 631.72↑, 133,000kcfs
Caught: one LMB apiece
Observations: Everything is flooded in the backwaters. The trees are starting to leaf out. The rhubarb in the backyard is the size of a small washtub and the red bud tree is close to blooming.

The weather was beautiful today, although it was actually hot on the water on account of a lack of any sort of breeze. A good friend Norm and myself were scouring the backwaters in search of bass and pike. We were targeting area just south of the spillway on the Iowa side of the river. Fishing was very unproductive; to say it was slow was an understatement. I never have very good success during periods of flooding. When there are several feet of water in the trees there is just an unlimited amount of areas where those fish can be. I just have not been able to figure out how to catch them in those conditions. The only dry ground in the area was either along the railroad tracks or the dike of the dam. The amount of eagle’s nests in this area is just incredible. I would have to say we saw at least twenty of them.

5-3-18

5-3-18 Lake Onalaska back waters, myself, 1730-1930
Weather: (1753) rain, calm, 67°, 29.82 ↓
H20: °?, clear, 12↑, 124,000kcfs
Caught: approx 6 pike and 3 bass
Observations: Spring has finally started, the magnolia tree are in bloom

It was an after work trip to the stump fields close to the house. The fish I did catch were in a shallow back bay with an absence of current. It has been a very late spring this year and none of the trees have started to leaf out.
