It was a very still and frigid night tonight. The water had a look of plate glass with a wisp or two of fog forming on the tranquil surface. The silence of the night was occasionally broken by the honk on a lone goose perhaps separated from its mate. Or, the metallic click click of the clicker on the reel as a fish snatched and ran with the sacrificial bluegill. The ride in Adams boat was one of excitement and fear. Excitement to get to the next spot and perhaps tie into a very large flathead. Fear because I have never plyed the waters in this stranger’s boat and did not know his skill of navigating the black night of the Mississippi river bottoms. All the while my back was turned in the opposite direction of travel. Occasionally I would get a glimpse of a clump of aquatic vegetation zip by my limited backward field of view. I did enjoy the spray of the water flinging out to the sides as we navigated turn after turn. The spray had the appearance of one of those crystal bead type curtains/room dividers that children enjoy playing with.
